Telstra phone bill scam

Australian telecommunications company Telstra has fallen victim to a newly-surfaced scam.

Email bills closely resembling those of Telstra have been sent out, opening with the usual subject line, “Your new Telstra Bill is ready to view”.

Even though both the legitimate and false bills have the same format, colour scheme and overall wording, the false version does not list an account number or feature the usual facebook and ‘live help’ icon in the top right corner, according to images obtained by 9NEWS.

Hovering over the “View Bill” option will reveal that the hoax email directs the victim to a website under the domain of williamhyde.com.au, one completely unrelated to Telstra.

The scam will either lead you to a malicious website, which will proceed to infect your computer, or to a page gathering your credit card details.

It has become increasingly important for people to look out for small, but significant scam characteristics in any emails requesting payment details.
